Over the last 30-some years I have facilitated and participated in thousands of meetings, and in doing so, have come up with six tips that I will share today with you, my readers, to help you have great meetings that get results.
TIP 1: A MEETING WILL BE RESPECTFUL
Start and end every meeting on time to establish respect for everyone's time. Prior to meeting time seek out individuals who are willing to volunteer to contribute during the meeting. Get people involved by gaining their permission to ask them lots of questions.
TIP 2: A MEETING WILL BE INFORMATIVE
In a great meeting, new ideas, developments, events, strategies are introduced or developed. This may include education, new product announcements, different ideas shared, and the like. In a great meeting you capitalize on good communications, even strengthen them. There is no reason why people should be left in the dark just guessing, when some information could easily be passed on. A meeting is often a good time to do so, since it allows for discussion and you can insuring that correct information is properly transferred.
TIP 3: A MEETINGS WILL INCLUDE SKILL DEVELOPMENT
A portion of every great meeting should center around skill development. This is where portions of presentations, role plays, interviews are practiced and panels are held. This is where you can plug in a demonstration or presentation of a new financial product or strategies for dealing with members in a positive manner. We suggest you assign some of you attendees a “teaching role” so that can have a hand in the development of their skill and that of their associates.
TIP 4: A MEETING WILL BE INSPIRATIONAL AND MOTIVATIONAL
Be sure to include healthy doses of inspiring messages in your meetings. There is an abundance “Positive Attitude” information available to use in meetings, so use it. People love quotes, compliments and encouraging words. This is a perfect way you can reinforce the desired behavior on the parts of individuals or the group collectively.
TIP 5: A MEETING WILL BE FUN
Keep 'em alive by maintaining enthusiasm. Stay to the topic at hand and be sure the meeting doesn't drag. People love goodies, so feel free to incorporate some give-aways and incentives to hand out.
TIP 6: A MEETING WILL PRODUCE RESULTS
End every meeting by asking attendees to summarize what they have gained from the meeting. Challenge them to come up with a plan to implement something have have learned. After the meeting, spend a little personal time analyzing what happened during the meeting and noting what worked and what did not work as a reference point for future meetings.
Obviously this list is not exhaustive, but there's definitely enough meat here to chew on for awhile.
