From the Desk of Bob

Everyone is telling me that business is really tough. Many companies are totally reinventing themselves and getting back to basics in all things. Survival and what we call here on the prairie "HUNKERIN' DOWN" are common words in every day phrases. I believe that we must tap our creative juices and maximize every bit of our potential. If we persevere with this kind of mind set not only will be survive but ultimately thrive. The wheat is being separated from the chaff. Leaner and meaner (nicer) companies will rise to the top in most ever industry.

Can you bear the load? Press on and challenge yourself to be the best that you can be. Not perfect-just pursuing zero defect. We are going to make mistakes. We may even fail. Failing is okay. Success comes from failure.

Cheers! Bob

Attitudes to Live By

"I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere to go. My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for the day."  ~Abraham Lincoln

"He who believes is strong; he who doubts is weak. Strong convictions precede great actions."  ~Louisa May Alcott

"Conviction is worthless unless it is converted into conduct." ~Thomas Carlyle

Seeds of Success: True Conviction: Character in Action

By Robert A. Prentice

Having conviction in a belief, an idea, a faith, or maybe a person is one thing, but TRUE conviction is when there is an action taken. I noticed my son's picture in the newspaper recently. He was in a group picture with a number of others who had shaved their heads for the Children's Miracle Network fund raising event. It can certainly make a dad proud when he sees his son doing something good for others and not just thinking of himself. Wow.

I call this positive behavior "character in action." With enough action in giving to others there is often a huge reward and it is never, ever what you expect. This is where true joy comes from. Bragging just a bit: I have actually noticed this behavior in all of our children. I believe that my wife and I purposely taught them the concept of service and reaching out to others. We endeavored to teach them by our example, and not just by our words. Put another way, we tried to make sure our actions were teaching them about our true convictions. It seems it is sticking with them for the long haul.

With the pressures on every one of us right now, it is often difficult to think of others and the challenges that they may be having because just dealing with our own issues is about all any of us can actually handle right now. I am convinced, though, that if we step outside of ourselves special things will happen. Take that step today. I know that I have already started. Surely, I cannot challenge you to do something that I have not already been working at with thought and determination. This is really a basic concept but everything seems to hinge on how we connect with others.

On the Sunny Side of Life: Marketing vs. Support

An inter-office softball game was held every year between the marketing and support staff of one company. The support staff whipped the marketing department soundly.

To show just how the marketing department earns their keep, they posted this memo on the bulletin board after the game: "The Marketing Department is pleased to announce that for the 2000 Softball Season, we came in second place, having lost but one game all year.  The Support Department, however, had a rather dismal season, winning only one game."
