This week's "E" word: Empower
verb: Give someone the authority or power to do something; Nobody was empowered to sign checks on her behalf. Enable someone to do something: Cryptography will empower individuals to control their information. Make someone stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights: movements to empower the poor
Life Attitudes
Bing Crosby: "Unless we make Christmas an occasion to share our blessings, all the snow in Alaska won't make it 'white'."
Norman MacEwan: "Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
Marc Estrin: "Kindness trumps greed: it asks for sharing. Kindness trumps fear: it calls forth gratefulness and love. Kindness trumps even stupidity, for with sharing and love, one learns."
Seeds of Success: The Power of Sharing
By Robert A. Prentice
My heart was truly warmed the other day as I observed two of my youngest grandchildren playing with each other. The two had their own way of communicating, one in his two-year-old chatter of barely discernible words and phrases, the other babbling and cooing her cute little baby sounds of delight. It was amazing to see how the older one was gladly sharing his toys with his little sister, and every once in awhile, one or the other of them would pause to give the other a hug. Their peaceful and joyful play caused me to think how much more a spirit of sharing is needed in our world today.
Especially at Christmas time, we are often reminded of the need to give to others in need. It's generally pretty easy to give if we feel we have much to give, but have you ever noticed how when things are tight that it's a little harder to share with others? I love the story in the Bible where Jesus tells about the widow who in sharing her last pennies gave up more then the rich man. What a lesson for all of us to remember. I believe that most of us want to be givers, but may need a nudge every now and then to remind us that sharing with others is a healthy thing for us to do. It is good for our heart and soul when we respond to the need of someone less fortunate by our sharing what we have with them.
This holiday season let's discover the power of sharing. Won't you join me in finding creative ways to share with those in need? The needs are overwhelming; however, if each one of us shares what we have with at least one other, it can truly be a merry Christmas for everyone.
After all, if even little ones can learn to share, we too can discover the power of sharing!
On the Sunny Side of Life
It was Christmas Eve and everyone in the Taylor household was asleep-that is, all except Daniel. He couldn't sleep. Soon morning would arrive and time for presents to be opened. Daniel got out of bed and went downstairs.
The house was full of Christmas Spirit. Even the TV screen was bordered with holly. Yep, this was his favorite time of the year. He had just finished filling a glass of water when Mrs. Taylor stepped into the kitchen. "Daniel, what are you doing up?" she whispered.
"Just getting a glass of water," he explained to the looming figure. "Couldn't sleep. Can we open
the presents now?"
"Oh, Daniel," she sighed. "It's only 2 a.m. It's too early to be thinking of that yet. Why don't you head back to bed?" He looked at her and nodded his head. "Ok, I'll do it but I won't like it." She grabbed his hand and they walked back upstairs.
He slid under the covers but sleep didn't come easy. He knew that there were wonderful things downstairs to be discovered. He tossed and turned.
2:30....3:00. Will morning EVER come, he wondered. Finally at 5 a.m. He could stand it no more and jumped to the floor.
He ran to the bedroom across the hall and flipped on the light switch. "MERRY CHRISTMAS! MERRY CHRISTMAS!" he shouted. "Time for presents! Let's go, let's go!"
The tired figure slowly sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes. She glanced at the clock and then back to the figure in the doorway. "Aw, Dad, it's 5 a.m. Can't we just sleep a little more?"
