From the Desk of Bob
Greetings from the Prairies of South Dakota!
With technology surrounding us in our lives it is smart to take advantage of as much of it as possible to manage our business and enhance our lives. Over the last three years I have been researching the capabilities of holding my seminars and doing training on-line. To date I have conducted a couple of dozen of these "webinars" and I really believe that I have seen the future.
Often I travel for hours to speak for an hour or two. I have done it this way for 20 years and I am sure that I will continue to do it for the next 20 years. However, I do love to save time whenever I can and these web conferences and teleconferences are great way to do that because I can virtually be anywhere on the planet and the only distance I have to travel is from my home to my office across the alley. Once at the office, I can go to my computer and magically within a few keystrokes, I can be facilitating a session and speaking to people who are also at their computers in their offices or homes. Not only do I get to save time, but my attendees do too, since they don't have to travel to my meetings.
Another benefit, I believe, is that the transfer of information is higher due to the greater focus of attention by the participants. Yes, there is still an occasional glitch with the technology and systems, but I am able to work through them with my service providers who are dedicated to assisting me in providing world-class training opportunities.
Oh, yes, and don't let me forget to mention that you can now view all my upcoming events on my website:

I have seen the future and the future is now! Bob.
Life Attitudes
General George S. Patton, Jr.: "Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
Stephen Covey: "An empowered organization is one in which individuals have the knowledge, skill, desire, and opportunity to personally succeed in a way that leads to collective organizational success."
"Lao Tzu: "A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves."
Seeds of Success: Training Yourself Out of a Job
By Robert A. Prentice
I am a big believer in the concept of delegation. Actually, I refer to this as "releasing opportunities." I love to teach people what I am doing and what I am capable of doing and ultimately having them own that specific responsibility, task, job, or opportunity. In other words training myself out of a job. No, I do not do this so that I can go golfing; I do this so that I can expand my world and take on more opportunities that I can master. This is very much like the cycle of life.
One of my favorite examples of this is with our daughter Elie. She is a pretty sharp 14 year old. She is always open to learning new things. She trusts me completely. When I release an opportunity to Elie, I first make sure that she sees it as an opportunity. I explain the benefits she will receive as a result of taking on this task or job, and since I am a fairly good communicator she usually seizes the opportunity presented to her with gusto.
Here's one of the many examples I could share about releasing opportunities to Elie. About three years ago I was tilling my garden with my little Mantis tiller-a powerful little roto-tiller that can really tear up the ground. As Elie stood nearby watching I asked if she wanted to give it a try. Her response was a hearty yes! Turns out she loved being able to use the tiller and she especially enjoyed be entrusted with such a machine. To date, Elie has torn up a lot of ground with that tiller and in fact, she is in complete charge of the cleaning and care of it too. I have done this over and over with all our children over the years with different tasks and chores, and boy do we get a lot done! I do it first, making sure I have mastered the task, job, chore and then release it with enthusiasm. I even have let go of some of my most favorite tasks.
The fact is the more that I can release the more that I can learn and grow as a leader. This is not the system if you want to be lazy or work less. It only works if your people see you taking on new tasks, roles, responsibilities, etc. so as to begin the process all over again. Leaders, remember that your people are watching you all the time. Training yourself out of a job is one of the smartest things that we can do to manage our lives even more effectively.
On the Sunny Side of Life: ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR
An absent minded college professor was preparing for work when his wife approached him and said, "Honey, don't forget, today is the day we are moving into our new house. Remember to come to the new address. Don't forget and come back here."
The professor acknowledged her reminder with that usual faraway look in his eye, and off he went to teach. At the end of the day the professor returned to his old house, unlocked the door and entered to find a totally empty house.
Puzzled, he turned and looked into the yard where he saw a young boy playing. He asked the lad, "Excuse me, young man, do you know the family that used to live here?"
The boy answered, "Yes, sir, I know them well."
To which the professor replied, "Can you tell me their new address?"
"Yes, sir, I can," the boy replied. " Here it is-Mom said you'd forget."
