From the Desk of Bob

Greetings from the Prairies of South Dakota!

In today's economy, you may be discovering that selling your product and/or services is harder than it's ever been. Even if you don't actually sell a product or service, you may be struggling in the process of trying to "sell" your boss on the idea of giving you a raise, or your teenager that they can get along without the latest gadget that everyone else has. The fact is, each one of us is trying to "sell" something every day; yet, as much as selling is a part of our daily lives, we are often rather uncomfortable with the process and really don't like to do it.

I can relate. That is why I have scheduled a special Keys to Better Selling webinar for Wednesday, October 29, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (Central Time) that will equip you with the tools, resources and ideas to help enhance your selling skills. This first session is part of a series of powerful training sessions, which I have used over the last 25 years to help thousands of people just like you achieve their goals. The only difference is we meet over the internet rather than in person; our classroom is a virtual one.

In this hour-long session, I will tell you about the ten ways to gain attention in the selling process. You will also learn three ways to deal with rejection. I will be able to answer your specific questions relating to sales and give you tips to help you succeed in the areas where you are experiencing difficulty in your sales presentation.

To Your Continued Success! Bob.

Seeds of Success: Applying Nuggets, Selling Spots!

By Robert A. Prentice

Beating the streets to sell radio advertising was not part of my original career objectives. I wanted to be a rock-n-roll disc jockey! And yet reality has a way of bringing us to our senses and a couple of stations into my broadcast career I was hired to do a morning shift from 6-9 a.m. at a radio station and then spend the rest of my day selling spots! ("Spot" is radio lingo for a 30-second commercial on a radio station, just in case you didn't know.)

At any rate, each day, I faced the daunting task of selling radio advertising when I really didn't know how. Frankly, I wore out a lot of shoe leather back in those days. I talked a lot, but I sold very little. It was extremely painful-the hardest thing I had ever done. My rejection was so great that I actually looked back at my very first labor job of hauling garbage one summer years before with fond memories. Now that's bad! At least there was the hourly wage when working on the garbage truck, but selling spots led to some mighty lean paychecks-not to mention the fact that my lack of sales was rattling my self-confidence, big-time!

Somehow I came to my senses and saw what an opportunity selling spots could be for me. I just knew there had to be a better way, and so I started searching for ways to get better at this selling job. Being a disc jockey talking to thousands of people on the radio was easy-a piece of cake, as easy as pie-and something I really loved. I wondered if it could ever be that way when it came to selling spots. Hmmmm!

My employer told me about a seminar that was coming up and suggested I take it. Maybe this would help. I soon began attending every sales seminar possible; I also read every book and magazine article on sales I could get my hands on. Every day I eagerly hit the streets determined to apply the nuggets of information I had learned. Ureka! This stuff really works! I found that just by changing a phrase or asking a specific question people were more eager to do business with me.  And guess what? I started selling spots-lots of them!

Over a period of time, and after working my way into management, things started to change. By then I had employees selling spots for me, and I was teaching them what I had learned about selling spots. Somewhere along the way, I discovered that much of what worked for selling spots also works for selling just about anything else-products, services, and even ideas! Ultimately, in the years since then, I have had thousands of people in my selling seminars learning what is required to sell something. Back in the early days of my career, I learned to apply nuggets and sell spots. Today I believe the key to seeing the results you desire is in taking the nuggets you have learned and applying it to your situation right away.

On the Sunny Side of Life: NEVER FELT BETTER!

In a court in Tralee, deep in County Kerry, Ireland, this conversation is reported to have taken place:

Lawyer: 'At the scene of the accident, Mr. O'Brien, did you tell the officer that you had never felt better in your life?'

O'Brien the farmer: 'That's right, sir.'

Lawyer: 'Well then, Mr. O'Brien, how is it that you are now claiming you were seriously injured when my client's car hit your cart?'

O'Brien the farmer: 'When the officer arrived, he went over to my horse, who had a broken leg, and shot him. Then he went over to Darcy, my dog, who was badly
hurt, and shot him. When he asked me how I felt, I just thought under the circumstances, it was a wise choice of words to say I've never felt better in my life.'
