From the Desk of Bob
Greetings!
I am back from my most recent journey to the Sunshine State of Florida. Amazingly the plane trip and the airports were on time, quick, efficient, and all the connections connected. Yeah! The conference and meetings went very well too.
The abundant sunshine, the ocean and salt air were incredible, and I got to meet some wonderful people in our meetings; I am looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with each and every one of them. I should note, I especially loved walking in the sand on the beach and swimming in the pool, just soaking these ol' bones a bit too. So relaxing!
Let me encourage you to take some time to explore this world whenever you get the opportunity. There is so much to see, smell, taste, touch and hear in this world, and I truly believe the key to living a richer and fuller life is to experience as much one possibly can. As they say, you only go around once in this life, but if you do it right, once is enough.
To life! Bob
Life Attitudes
Ronald Reagan: "You on the cutting edge of technology have already made yesterday's impossibilities the commonplace realities of today."
Abraham Lincoln: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe."
Jim Rohn: "Never wish life were easier, wish that you were better."
Seeds of Success: On the Cutting Edge
By Robert A. Prentice
The dynamics of business, in this time of such uncertainty, is continually changing. How do we as business people cope with those changes? One thing for sure is that we must be certain we are operating on the cutting edge. What do I mean by 'cutting edge'? Well, the cutting edge of a knife is the sharp side-the side you slice and dice with. The cutting edge, if it is to maintain its ability to cut, also requires care and even some occasional sharpening.
For us as business leaders, the cutting edge is where we know we need to be the sharpest so we can cut it-that is thrive and succeed-as we compete in the marketplace. We need to keep our skills and attitudes sharp, and work hard to protect ourselves from anything that may dull our creativity and our potential, including 'dull' people-those people that don't see the need to learn and grow and stay sharp.
How do we keep our cutting edge sharp? First of all by gently connecting ourselves with others who are sharp. Hang out with positive, uplifting people. Secondly, make daily investments into their lives. This will return back to you ten-fold!
Be willing to sharpen your talents, skills, and knowledge no matter what the cost. Read and write about what matters to you the most. Pouring things out of your head on paper or in a word processor will help you formulate your thinking. This will keep you sharp- trust me. In fact, one of the many reasons that I write weekly is that it forces me to stay disciplined and focused in my life. It actually helps me process my thoughts and ideas. The feedback that I get both positive and the negative also helps to keep me sharp and this keeps me on the cutting edge.
Take the time-no, make the time-to invest in sharpening your cutting edge. You will discover that your life will be richer, your business or organization will be running smoother and you will be operating on the cutting edge.
On the Sunny Side of Life: WOULD YOU HIRE THIS PERSON?
The following are "actual" post-interview excerpts collected from middle managers who, needless to say, probably did not hire any of the people mentioned here:
* Applicant stretched out on the floor to fill out the job application.
* She wore a Walkman and said she could listen to me and the music at the same time.
* A balding candidate abruptly excused himself. Returned to office a few minutes later, wearing a hairpiece.
* Applicant asked to see interviewer's resume to see if the personnel executive was qualified to judge the candidate.
* Applicant announced she hadn't had lunch and proceeded to eat a hamburger and french fries in the interviewer's office - wiping the ketchup on her sleeve.
* When I asked him about his hobbies, he stood up and started tap dancing around my office.
* Applicant pulled out a Polaroid camera and snapped a flash picture of me. Said he collected photos of everyone who interviewed him.
* Said he wasn't interested because the position paid too much.
* A telephone call came in for the job applicant. It was from his wife. His side of the conversation went like this: "Which company? When do I start? What's the salary?" I said, "I assume you're not interested in conducting the interview any farther."
