From the Desk of Bob

Half the year has slipped by quite quickly, it seems to me. As we enter the second half of 2008 let me remind you about your goals for the remainder of this year.

Are you on track? What obstacles continue to get in your way? Roadblocks and obstacles are a natural fact in life. How we respond to them is the key to happiness, joy and our ultimate success.

This week's article is designed to challenge you to fire up and re-commit to the successful achievement of your goals, dreams and desires.

Fired Up! Bob

Life Attitudes

Napoleon Hill: "The time will never be just right."

Stephan Covey: "If you're proactive, you don't have to wait for circumstances or other people to create perspective-expanding experiences. You can consciously create your own."

Anonymous: "Proactive living is life on purpose. This differs from reactive living, which is life in response to others. A part of every day must be reserved for doing purposeful things purposefully."

Seeds of Success: Being Proactive Produces Positive Results

By Robert A. Prentice

Taking action is a positive forward motion. It is true that we can wait patiently for things to happen and there is obviously a time and place for this strategy; we can decide to put things off until a later time. Yes, we can choose to take the passive route with a "wait and see" attitude or we can choose to procrastinate, but I have never known a time when either of these was a positive thing. Passive behavior always seems to bite me and I have found that it is much better to be proactive whenever possible.

I wholeheartedly subscribe to the philosophy of "take action now," which has served me well for many years. Actually doing the work that it requires to get the job done is an example of being proactive. We become proactive by researching information and gathering the facts-which may be as simple as asking a question or two, or as extensive as spending hours, days, weeks, or even months in intensive research- and then processing the newly discovered information with effective planning and confident decision-making, and then acting on it.

Personally, I would rather not just sit and wait for the world to beat a path to my door. I am going to go out and meet the world. Taking proactive action on something is much better then the passive wait and see approach and is very similar to an attitude of preventive maintenance.

Preventive maintenance on our car can save a lot of headaches, such as a breakdown in the middle of nowhere or smack dab in the middle of the big city during rush hour. A few quick minor repairs or a rotation of the tires can save you many hours of lost time out on the open road. Likewise, preventive maintenance on your home has the potential to increase it's value substantially plus, it can also reduce headaches when the storms blow. It's the same with any of our most valued possessions-preventive maintenance retains their life and preciousness and usually saves us a lot of hassle in the long run.

This same principle is true for the goals and dreams in our life. They all need a little preventive maintenance and some proactive attention from time to time. Wishful thinking and hoping things will just happen by osmosis are mind sets of the people who will still be wishing and hoping while the rest of us are achieving our hearts' desire.

Start by removing those pesky roadblocks and challenges that are hindering your success. What are those roadblocks? Identify them. Is it laziness, a bad attitude, or procrastination? It may be organization, or the lack there of.

Take pro-active action by making that important phone call or writing that letter that can make all the difference. The time is now! Take pro-active action now by attending that special meeting at the city council. Take a minute and put it in your calendar. Then attend it. It may change your life.

Clean off your desk and start fresh and clean today. You may even find that little slip of paper that you have been looking for with that important phone number on it.

Being proactive produces positive results in your life that can impact you positively for a long, long time.

On the Sunny Side of Life: GOTTA GET SOME REST

An old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home. He followed me into the house, down the hall, and fell asleep in a corner. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, resumed his position in the hall, and slept for an hour. This continued for several weeks. Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: "Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap."

The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with ten children; he's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?"
