Douglas MacArthur: "There is no security on this earth. Only opportunity."

Erich Fromm: "Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties."

Helen Keller: "Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."

Seeds of Success: Behold the Turtle

By Robert A. Prentice

"Behold the turtle, he makes progress only when he sticks his neck out!"
  -James Bryan Conant

If we never stick our neck out to take a risk we may never experience the best things in life. Taking qualified risks isn't always something we like to do, but it is actually a pretty smart thing to do because it can, and very often will, bring out the best that is in you and will move you forward toward reaching your fullest potential.

There are many reasons why people tend to hold back from taking risks. Here's a short list of them:

* Fear of the unknown
* Fear of loss
* Fear of what others may think or say about us
* Fear of failure

Here is a short list of things that will most likely occur if we stick our neck out:

* Potenital increase in income
* Potential advancement in position
* Potential growth in professional development
* Potential for greater life satisfaction and purpose

Never allow fear of any kind keep you from reaching your potential or the wealth of great things that may come to you as a result of a taking a qualified risk.

When contemplating taking a risk, do not think that you have to move too quickly. On the contrary, you probably should take things quite slowly, methodically, and consistently-like the turtle. (Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?)

You always want to make sure you have gathered all the facts before you stick your neck out. Trust me, I have learned from personal experience not to jump too quickly into something. It can really hurt. Yet, I do not allow my past failures in the area of risk taking hold me back from taking risks today. My philosophy, when it comes to risk taking can be summed up best by one of my favorite poems entitled, "Risk".

Risk By William Arthur Ward

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk
    their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life
     is to risk nothing.

The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.

He may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live.
Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom.

Only a person who risks is free.

The pessimist complains about the wind;
The optimist expects it to change;
And the realist adjusts the sails.

On the Sunny Side of Life

A computer novice is having trouble with his computer so decides to get some technical support. Here is their conversation:

Tech Support: "I need you to right-click on the Desktop."

Customer: "Ok."

Tech Support: "Did you get a pop-up menu?"

Customer: "No."

Tech Support: "Ok. Right click again. Do you see a pop-up menu?"

Customer: "No."

Tech Support: "Ok, sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?"

Customer: "Sure, you told me to write 'click' and I wrote click'."

There are three engineers in a car; an electrical engineer, a chemical engineer, and a Microsoft Software Engineer.
Suddenly the car just stops by the side of the road, and the three engineers look at each other wondering what could be wrong.

The electrical engineer suggests stripping down the electronics of the car and trying to trace where a fault might have occurred.

The chemical engineer, not knowing much about cars, suggests that maybe the fuel is becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere.

Then the Microsoft engineer, not knowing much about anything, comes up with a suggestion. "Why don't we close all the windows, get out, get back in, open the windows again, and maybe it'll work?"
