From the Desk of Bob

Each week I search my life and ask myself what lessons have I learned and what lessons may I need to relearn to maximize my personal and professional potential. I do this because I dare not rest on my laurels. As we all know, resting on our laurels will result in failure, and failure is something that I personally do not desire.

Living a full and happy life is such an incredible process every single day. I want to squeeze every drop of goodness I can get out of life each day. The people I meet and the experiences that I have cause me to live a rich life and cherish every moment.

Make every day count! Bob

"Life is not a spectator sport. If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're wasting your life."
-Jackie Robinson

"To get all there is out of living, we must employ our time wisely, never being in too much of a hurry to stop and sip, but never losing our sense of the enormous value of a minute."
-Robert Upsegraff

"Today, be aware of how you are spending your 1,440 beautiful moments, and spend them wisely."

Seeds of Success: The Preciousness of Time

By Robert A. Prentice

Do you place a high value on your time? Do you pay attention to where your time is going? Do you ever wish you could just have a couple more hours each day? Well, it is possible! Allow me to share what our family has done.

At our house, we had been talking quite a bit about the preciousness of time and most specifically elapsed time, when early last month we had a major revelation as a family, and had to admit that we were all wasting a huge amount of time watching TV. So after talking it over, we decided to pull the plug on the cable service. The first few days were pretty tough, but within a week or so, we were adjusting to the change pretty well. We still watch an occasional movie on DVD, but the television no longer controls us; we are now in control of what we watch and when.

Honestly, this been quite a mind opening experience, and I am happy to say that I am no longer wasting valuable time just absent-mindedly flipping through channels trying to find something interesting to watch, but finding more productive things to do. Elie, our 13-year old, recently commented that she has enjoyed finding new and different things to do with her time, too. She says she is spending more time reading and learning. She has taken up digital photography with her new "found" time and is finding she has quite a knack for finding photo opportunities. Vicki says she likes having more time to enjoy each other's company without having to compete with the TV, and we have gotten to work on some special projects together, as well. I would say this simple, though very difficult decision has been a truly amazing experience for our whole family.

I am searching every day for tools, resources, and ideas to make the best use of my time and maximize my efficiencies in life and business and it feels really, really good. It is especially great when I discover these kinds of decisions have made a positive impact on those closest to me in my life.

What about you? Have you thought about the preciousness of time and how it impacts your life? It's easy to talk about our priorities, performance standards, jobs, commitments, and deadlines, but then do we really stop and do a quick check up on our attitudes towards time? Maybe it's time for you to take a closer look at your time-to review where your time is being invested and to assure that you are making the right kinds of decisions concerning its use.

For the next few days, make note of where your hours and minutes are going. Then make a plan to give up something that is hindering you in some way, in order that you might achieve a higher level of productivity or gain time to spend on something more worthwhile. You don't have to give up cable TV, like I did-and then again, you may want to consider it. The way I figure it, our family has gained at least an extra 48 hours each month just as a result of taking control over the TV. That's an extra couple of hours each day we can now choose to invest elsewhere! I feel good about being so productive and I feel even better about what we are teaching our daughter about the preciousness of time.

On the Sunny Side of Life: A Pun-Lovers Paradise

Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they lit a fire in the craft it sank- proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too.

Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils.

Two atoms are walking down the street and they run into each other. One says to the other, "Are you all right?" "No, I lost an electron!" "Are you sure?" "Yeah, I'm positive!"

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

A hungry lion was roaming through the jungle looking for something to eat. He came across two men. One was sitting under a tree and reading a book; the other was typing away on his typewriter. The lion quickly pounced on the man reading the book and devoured him. Even the king of the jungle knows that readers digest and writers cramp.
