Seeds of Success: Pick Up That Ten-Ton Telephone!
By Robert A. Prentice
With the advent of the internet, email and other great recent technological advances there is still nothing like picking up the telephone and calling someone. It is fast and is the next best thing to being there face to face. But we have a tendency to take things for granted and sometimes forget the power of such things as the telephone. Over the last year and a half I have been reminded over and over again how vital the telephone is to life and of course business-literally the umbilical cord or lifeline of business. In fact, just the other day I was telling a new employee that if the internet goes down for the day we can survive that no sweat. But if we lose our phone service it could severely cripple our business. We need our lifeline to be working everyday; it is that vital.
As valuable as the telephone can be, I know a lot of people who don't really like to use it; they are a bit timid and afraid that they might be an interruption to others. To them, picking up that phone to make a call is so hard you'd think it weighed ten tons. It doesn't have to be this way. I have discovered that people want to hear from us, and in actuality, all we really need to do is ask the person we are calling if they have a minute or two to chat. If they do, that's great; if not, then you can ask if there is a better time to call. It's that simple.
In business, it is often a temptation to think that we can simply wait for the world to call us; but face it-we may experience a long, long wait because people are not always beating a path to our door. The smartest thing I know to do is to pick up that telephone and call the world.
Yes, picking up that ten-ton telephone isn't necessarily easy, but it's something that you can and should do, so just do it! You, too, will discover that people want to be "touched" over the phone. With all the do not call lists, and spam filters and such, it is apparent that we are living in a permission-based business world, so go ahead and call to ask permission to send somebody information on your goods or services. If they say No, you have lost nothing but a few moments of your time, and if they say Yes, then opportunity abounds for more business.
Even if making phone calls isn't your most favorite thing to do, you can put aside your fears and pick up that ten-ton telephone today. Call your customers, your future customers, your friends, your associates, and plant a seed for business; ask for a referral or a letter of testimonial or share a business idea or a positive quote to build a relationship. And with every call you make, you will discover that your telephone really weighs much less than ten tons!

On the Sunny Side of Life
During a performance for the high school drama class at the local theatre, a hole was cracked in the stage floor. Subsequent acts managed to avoid the damaged area until little Freddy, juggling bowling pins, accidentally stepped through the hole up to his knee. He apologized to the audience for his clumsiness. But a heckler in the back of the theatre shouted: "Don't worry, Freddy! It's just a stage you're going through!"
