Seeds of Success: Zest and Gusto

By Robert A. Prentice

Struggling with my weight and attempts at weight loss for 25 long years has taken its toll on me, both physically and mentally. After so many attempts and failures I have discovered that I am literally addicted to bad carbs-sugar and white breads. Knowing and understanding this has changed my attitude completely over the past couple of months ago and with a zest and gusto I have never experienced before, I am making more healthy choices that are helping me to succeed.

I shifted my attitudes about pop, cake, pie, ice cream, candy, donuts, "white" breads, and then shifted my attitudes further by increasing my veggies, fruit, and water intake. In just 60 days I have lost several inches of body fat, I have increased my energy level, I am thinking clearer in every aspect of my life, and it seems like everything I touch is generating huge success both personally and professionally. I have even noticed that my knee doesn't hurt anymore, and I don't have all those other aches and pains I was attributing to the fact that I am getting older!

The mental impact has been huge for me when I realize I am able to wear clothes I have not been able to wear in several years and they are fitting me better than ever. When the momentum of my lifestyle change hit me there were some additional discoveries:

* More energy-I am feeling as productive as my greenhouse, which is producing such a bumper crop of lettuce and spinach this spring that we are sharing the extras with our neighbors!

* Clearer thinking-It seems my decisions are easier to make, and this is paying off for me big time in business and in my personal life.

* Better attitude-I take this Mr. Attitude reputation quite seriously, you know, and when I feeling and looking better, and experiencing success it's really been awesome for my attitude.

My dear wife and our two daughters have been incredible accountability partners for me, as they have also been shifting their lifestyle strategies and are having similar successes, too. I have been blessed with some very dear clients, friends and associates that have also been greatly encouraging.

There is no question that I still have another 75 more pounds of body fat to go before I am where I want to be. I don't allow myself to become overwhelmed by that, because I am determined to take it just one day at a time. Yes, I have cheated; I just get back on track as quickly as I can, and don't beat myself up for it. Justification and portion control, along with slowing down my eating process, are areas that I need to continually focus on.

Maybe you can relate to what I've written here today and maybe your area of difficulty isn't your weight, but something else. Whatever the difficult area you are dealing with, when you attack it with an attitude of creativity, tenacity, and a little zest and gusto anything is possible. And do you know what? Sometimes miracles do happen!

On the Sunny Side of Life

Two gas company servicemen-a training supervisor and a young trainee-were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter.  Finishing the meter check, the supervisor challenged his younger co-worker to a footrace down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.

As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from the last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. Naturally, they stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I just knew I'd better run too!"
